Endgame mapping guide

How to start the Path of Exile 2 Atlas after the campaign in patch 0.5.5: Waystones and revives, map tiers and area levels, Precursor Tablets, the fortress quest line to the two Arbiters, spending Atlas points, choosing league mechanics, pushing to tier 16 and farming the pinnacle bosses.

Endgame mapping in Path of Exile 2 begins when the campaign ends: at the Ziggurat Refuge Doryani hands you a first Waystone for the map device, and from then on you run maps across the Atlas, an endless world map, toward higher tiers and better loot. Scorpius's 0.5 endgame guide (Jun 6, 2026) describes the first steps: after your first tier 1 map you can map from your own hideout, and the map device starts the main quest line, which he recommends following before roaming for league mechanics. The Atlas as it stands in patch 0.5.5 dates from Return of the Ancients (0.5.0, May 29, 2026), which added a precursor fortress storyline called Origins of Divinity and a fully allocatable Atlas passive tree, with further changes in Forbidden Rites (0.5.5, Sep 4, 2026). Endgame describes the system as a whole; the Leveling guide covers the road to level 65.

Quick facts

Map tiers 1 to 16: tier 1 is area level 65, tier 16 is area level 80
Revives Five on a white Waystone, four on a magic one, two on a four-modifier rare, none on a six-modifier rare
Tablet slots One with a magic Waystone, two with a rare, three with six modifiers; a fourth in city maps with an Atlas node
Atlas passive tree About 335 points, all allocatable since 0.5.0; points cannot be refunded
Fortress pinnacle bosses Arbiter of Ash, Arbiter of Divinity
Core mechanics on the Atlas Breach, Delirium, Ritual, Expedition, Abyss, the Vaal temple, Runes of Aldur content
Masters of the Atlas Doryani, Hilda, Jado
New in 0.5.5 A non-quest Arbiter of Divinity kill completes the whole fortress (the quest kill no longer completes a section); Abyssal ravines; Expedition tablets; new Arbiter resistances

Waystones, revives and tiers

Maps and Waystones are the same thing, Barricade explains in his beginner mapping guide (Jul 5, 2026), and every modifier on a Waystone makes the map harder and richer. The cost is revives: a white Waystone gives five attempts, a magic one with two modifiers four, a four-modifier rare two, and a six-modifier rare none, so one death loses the map. Modifiers such as monster rarity, Waystone drop chance, monster effectiveness, item rarity and pack size are what make a map rewarding. Every map has a boss, and since patch 0.3.1 killing it completes the map, which Jonathan Rogers explained in GGG's endgame changes video of Sep 25, 2025; you can do as much or as little of the rest as you like. See Waystones.

For the first maps, Zizaran's advice (Dec 17, 2025) is to run them blue with an Orb of Transmutation and an Orb of Augmentation, and if a modifier is too dangerous, use an Orb of Alchemy to reroll it into a rare. Penetration is the modifier he avoids most. He heads straight for the boss and clears 60 to 90% of a map, never all of it. For sustain he buys Waystones cheaply for gold from Doryani and upgrades bought tier 14s into tier 15s at the reforging bench.

Barricade's no-currency method is "alc and go": an Orb of Alchemy turns a normal or magic Waystone straight into a rare with four modifiers, with no Transmutation, Augmentation or Regal Orb needed, and you run it without tablets.

Precursor Tablets

Tablets are how you steer a map. Jonathan Rogers explained in September 2025 that players disliked hunting towers to use them, so tablets now go straight into the map device: each one adds its bonuses to the map and loses a use each time, until it breaks. Up to three fit in a map, and the slots depend on the Waystone's modifiers: the Atlas guide on Zizaran's channel (Jun 16, 2026) counts none for a white map, one for a blue, two for a rare and three for a six-modifier rare. Irradiated tablets add one monster level, and mechanic tablets such as Abyss ones add more of that mechanic, making the map harder but richer. Barricade adds that an Atlas node gives city maps a fourth slot, which makes them the richest maps. Tablets have been capped at four modifiers since 0.4.0, whose patch notes tied crafting a tablet beyond two modifiers to beating the Arbiter of Ash. See Precursor towers and tablets.

The fortress quest line

Since 0.5.0 the Atlas has fixed points of interest with quest lines around your starting point. GGG's reveal (May 7, 2026) shows what happens the first time you visit a tower: a gigantic precursor fortress rises from the earth, and you must get inside, activate its gates and gain the keys to its ancient weapons. Many fortress maps have special rules, such as rares sealed in essence crystals or packs replaced by strongboxes.

Scorpius walks through the quest. The first tower is about three maps from the start and opens the Ancient Gate; a straight path inside leads to the Burning Monolith, platform of the first pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. Do the lower-tier western gateway first and reach each Enigma chamber through as few maps as possible, because whole sections can be completed for free later; the two chambers give two fragments and Doryani supplies the third for the quest fight. Beating Ash opens the Origin Tower: bring the Origin Cradle and Origin Spark from the Patriarch and Matriarch Halls to Doryani, who combines them into an Origin Core, and beat the Arbiter of Divinity. In 0.5.0 that quest kill also completed a fortress section; since patch 0.5.5 it no longer does, and the sections come from the harder version below (0.5.5 patch notes).

GGG made the fortress easier in 0.5.5 because the event league is a fresh economy: after the main quest line you can venture out of the fortress, find another Arbiter of Divinity key, and by beating that more difficult version have all the remaining fortress sections completed automatically. The 0.5.5 patch notes put it exactly: defeating the Arbiter of Divinity with a non-quest Origin Core completes the whole Precursor Fortress for the map's owner, so the Atlas passive tree can be allocated freely, and the Matriarch and Patriarch Halls, where the Origin Cradle and Origin Spark are found, can now appear closer to the Ziggurat Refuge. Barricade's shortcut from July 2026, for trade leagues only, is to buy an Origin Cradle and an Origin Spark from other players and combine them yourself, rather than paying more for a finished Origin Core that people flip for profit.

Fubgun, in his end-of-Early-Access feedback recorded after 0.5.5 (Sep 26, 2026), goes further: the optimal start is to boss-rush a hundred or more maps to the center of the Atlas and kill the Arbiter of Divinity twice before touching league mechanics, because without the base Atlas tree's loot multipliers and points in their own trees, Abyss, Breach or Ritual drop little of value. He counts this as a flaw, but calls it the only correct way to start in the current patch.

Spending Atlas points

GGG rebuilt the Atlas passive tree in 0.5.0 because the old one "just wasn't up to scratch". Points now come from every fortress area you complete, so the whole tree can be allocated, and many nodes are multi-choice: everyone gets the node, but you choose which bonus to use, for example whether powerful boss maps hold more essences, summoning circles or rogue exiles.

Scorpius counts 335 points in the tree in 0.5. It makes maps harder but more rewarding and unlocks irradiated tablets, Fracturing Orbs, exceptional items and further tablet crafting. Each normal fortress map gives one point, each fortress tower four, and completing a section through the Arbiter of Divinity about 40 to 50. The warning that matters most: since 0.5 Atlas points cannot be refunded, apart from changing the choice on multi-choice nodes, so you can over-juice your maps early. Either hold points until you are sure, or spread them in a balanced way.

Area level decides which nodes work. Tier 1 maps are area level 65 and each tier adds one, up to level 80 at tier 16; the strong early node Eons of Contamination, which lets irradiated tablets drop, only works in level 70 zones, which are tier 6 maps. Scorpius names tier 6 and tier 11 as the two power spikes. His path for new and returning players starts with a shrine cluster and the small nodes for magic and rare monsters, then Eons of Contamination once white tier 6 maps are comfortable (if not, essences and strongboxes, or hold the points), then No Simple Battles, Valuable Paths and Specialized Seeker for difficulty, loot and map sustain. The bigger upgrades need area level 75, so he advises a player stuck between tiers 1 and 10 to take the middle circle and the star-shaped cluster.

Choosing league mechanics

The Atlas guide on Zizaran's channel maps where each mechanic's quest line sits: Delirium to the southwest, Ritual further west, Breach straight south, Abyss to the east, the Vaal temple (Fate of the Vaal) to the northeast, and Kingsmarch with Expedition to the far southeast. Its verdicts: Abyss is a great starter that drops Divine Orbs and omens, Delirium is very deadly, Ritual is rewarding but its Rite of the Nameless pits you against about six bosses at once, the temple expects knowledge and time, and Expedition is straightforward. It recommends Abyss and Ritual first, notes that GGG does not expect anyone to do every mechanic and, unlike Fubgun, suggests unlocking one or two mechanics before the main Atlas.

Patch 0.5.5 added Abyssal ravines to the Atlas: every map along a ravine has abysses, each map more rewarding than the last, ending in a guaranteed Abyssal boss. Runes of Aldur content, Farrul, Dannig and Expedition became part of the core game from Act 4 on, and new Expedition tablets allow two full expeditions and two extra remnant encounters in one map. Barricade almost always runs Jado as his Master of the Atlas, whose Unexpected Missions gives corrupted Waystones an extra modifier.

Other mapping changes in 0.5.5

GGG's patch notes for 0.5.5 (Sep 2, 2026) changed several things a mapper meets every day. Both Arbiters lost their resistance to all elements: the Arbiter of Ash now resists fire and is vulnerable to cold, and the Arbiter of Divinity resists lightning and is vulnerable to fire, so an elemental build should check its damage type before choosing which to farm. Expedition tablets are found in Standard and Forbidden Rites (not Runes of Aldur) and add to a map in steps: one tablet adds a Kalguuran expedition, two add a Verisium remnant and 35% more expedition density, three a second expedition and four a second remnant and another 35%. Using more than one Ritual tablet adds an extra altar when possible. The Viridian Wildwood unique map was disabled and existing ones on the Atlas rerolled into other unique maps. Corrupted Nexus maps can be retried after a failure, and dying to a map boss no longer stops the corrupted boss from spawning. Doryani's Refined Formula was removed as a Master of the Atlas option and replaced by Archaic Corruption, which corrupts monsters released from essences. Inside the Trial of the Sekhemas, where Atlas passives do not apply, the trial now gains its own bonuses to rarity, pack size and drops from area level 65.

Pushing to tier 16

Barricade's cheap "journeyman" method takes an alchemied Waystone to six modifiers with two Exalted Orbs and then corrupts it with a Vaal Orb, which can drop it to tier 14, leave it unchanged, reroll modifiers, raise it to tier 16, or with luck make an eight-modifier tier 15. Zizaran's guide explains why that matters: some of the best modifier tiers, such as the top physical damage roll, need item level 82, and a tier 16 map can reach it, since rare monsters and bosses drop items two levels above the area. The Making currency guide covers the more expensive omen recipe Barricade uses for high-rarity maps.

Pinnacle bosses

The quest versions of both Arbiter fights are on normal difficulty with unlimited attempts and no experience loss. After that, Scorpius explains, you farm their fragments from citadels, marked on the Atlas by tall colored beams, or buy them: the Arbiter of Ash needs the Ancient, Faded and Weathered Crisis Fragments, the Arbiter of Divinity an Origin Cradle and Origin Spark. These are much harder Uber versions, still with unlimited tries and no experience loss. The other pinnacles belong to the mechanics, such as Xesht for Breach and the Vessel of Kulemak for Abyss; see Pinnacle bosses. GGG's own figures two weeks into 0.5 (Jun 14, 2026) show what the fortress costs: the Arbiter of Ash killed players 3,516,457 times, the most of any boss, and the Arbiter of Divinity was defeated 1,249,367 times.

Frequently asked questions

What do I do after finishing the campaign in Path of Exile 2? Go to the Ziggurat Refuge, run the Waystone Doryani gives you, then follow the main quest line from the map device to the first tower and the precursor fortress.

How many Atlas points are there in 0.5? Scorpius counts 335 (Barricade says 336), and the whole tree can be allocated. Points cannot be refunded, apart from multi-choice nodes.

How do I get tier 16 maps? Corrupt a six-modifier tier 15 Waystone with a Vaal Orb; one possible outcome is a tier 16.

Which league mechanic should I start with? The Atlas guide on Zizaran's channel recommends Abyss and Ritual first; Fubgun recommends rushing the Arbiter of Divinity twice before investing in any mechanic.

What changed in the endgame in 0.5.5? GGG added a harder Arbiter of Divinity key that completes the rest of the fortress, Abyssal ravines ending in an Abyssal boss, and Expedition tablets, and changed both Arbiters' resistances.

Does the quest Arbiter of Divinity kill complete a fortress section? Not since patch 0.5.5. Defeating the Arbiter of Divinity with a non-quest Origin Core completes the whole Precursor Fortress instead.

What elements do the Arbiters resist in 0.5.5? The Arbiter of Ash resists fire and is vulnerable to cold; the Arbiter of Divinity resists lightning and is vulnerable to fire. Neither resists all elements any more.
